Holiday types, explained
The terms you’ll see on each country page, and what they mean for your team’s calendar.
A day set by law or government decree when most businesses, schools and government offices close. Employees are usually entitled to the day off, often with pay. National holidays apply across the whole country.
A day that is marked or celebrated but is not a day off work, such as Mother’s Day or Earth Day. Offices and schools normally stay open.
Holidays that apply only in a particular state, province, region or city. A teammate in one region may be off while colleagues elsewhere in the same country are working.
These terms are used in India. Gazetted holidays are compulsory closures listed by the central government. Restricted holidays are optional: employees choose a limited number of them from a published list.
A public holiday when banks and many businesses close. The term is most common in the UK and Ireland, where bank holidays work as the main public holidays.
